Sarasota Golf Clubs & Courses

Of the dozens of great local courses, 15 are adjacent to golf communities. These neighborhoods are all much sought after by snowbirds, active retirees, and others who just love the game.

Dozens of challenging courses now dot the area, and many are only a few minutes away from downtown Sarasota. Whitfield Estates is now the Sara Bay Country Club, a private, member-owned club located just north of downtown Sarasota. The Bobby Jones Golf Club is Sarasota’s only municipal golf facility, with 45 holes of fun and challenges.

More than 80 public, private, and semi-private golf courses are within a short drive of Sarasota, including courses designed by Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, and Arnold Palmer. Every golf enthusiast, from the beginning amateur to the seasoned professional, will find plenty of opportunities and challenges in this great golf city.

Sarasota Golf History

Early in its history, Saraosta became a golf destination. Colonel John Hamilton Gillespie, a Scottish aristocrat who became known as "the Father of Sarasota," arrived there from Scotland in 1886 and introduced Florida to golf. By May of 1886, Gillespie had built what was perhaps the first golf venue in America, a two-hole "course" in downtown Sarasota. In 1904 he constructed the area's first nine-hole course, and he was one of Florida's first championship golfers.

The first 18-hole course built was Whitfield Estates Country Club. Whitfield Estates was designed by another Scotsman, Donald Ross, who achieved some fame in the 1920s as a prominent golf course architect. Famed golfer Bobby Jones was hired to promote the Whitfield Estates development. Ross was quickly hired by the city of Sarasota to design a municipal golf course, and the new public course was named the Bobby Jones Golf Club when it opened in 1927.
